The construction work to build a new sports hall for Pinewood School in Bourton.
The project was extremely successful with families and friends of Pinewood School attending the opening of the sports hall. The sports hall was opened by A.P McCoy and received fantastic feedback not only from members at the event but also the school itself.
RJ Leighfield & Sons prides itself on the relationship it has built with Pinewood School over the years and feels that their ethos on how building and business should be done shines through with this relationship.
This design and build project of a two-storey facility comprised changing rooms, showers, drying rooms and locker room, to provide daily sports changing for almost 300 children on a visually sensitive site, sandwiched between a swimming pool and a wooded copse. Design work was carried out by DPDS Consulting Group resulting in a traditional construction with a reinforced slab, precast concrete first floor and profiled sheet cladding roof. The external envelope was a mixture of face brickwork, render and Siberian larch.
This scheme comprised the conversion of the former boys changing rooms into a new science teaching facility comprising two science laboratories, a preparation room, classroom, toilet facilities and an entrance lobby. DPDS Consulting Group produced a design that greatly improved the external appearance of the building and at the same time provided the school with a modern teaching facility. The existing roof was re-tiled and insulated, the floor replaced and the complete drainage system renewed to incorporate the laboratory benching and new toilet facilities.
A recent addition to Kingsdown School, this design and build project has provided both an autistic spectrum disorder unit and a virtual learning centre. The design originally by Swindon Borough’s in-house architects was progressed into working construction drawings by Springfield Design Partnership who R J Leighfield also retained to carry out the structural engineering work for the project. The original school at Kingsdown was also built by R J Leighfield back in 1936.
Even Swindon Primary School
This project has provided a new two-storey teaching block, which has enabled the existing junior and infant schools to be combined on one site. Facilities provided include nursery and reception classrooms, including secure outside play areas, a sports hall, staff room, ICT suite, music rooms and food technology rooms. The Swindon Borough Council's 'Centre of Excellence for Speech and Language Difficulties' is now also based at the school.
